We are the parents, relatives, guardians and friends of the residents at Southbury Training School (STS). Since 1949, our focus has been on the welfare of our loved ones. We work to ensure that their life-long home at STS provides superior care and health services delivered with the highest of standards from one of the last facilities of its kind that is overseen by Connecticut’s Department of Developmental Services (DDS).
Advocates for I/DD Individuals
Our focus is also on the more than one thousand people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Connecticut who are waiting for suitable and permanent places to live, some for as long as 25 years.
We are also concerned for younger generations of families who will inevitably struggle to find long-term care and living solutions for their I/DD children.
Advocates for STS
We believe STS can be part of the solution to this crisis.
STS has served our loved ones with excellent care for decades. STS has highly trained staff who understand their needs. They receive expert services through state-of-the-art medical and dental facilities. They live in group-home cottage residences within a beautiful country setting. And they enjoy activities within the Southbury community and beyond.
However, since 1986, admission to STS has been closed. And, because of its long history, STS is perceived as an outdated institution, not a high-quality, long-term care solution for I/DD individuals.
It’s time to change that perception. It’s time for the Southbury Training School to reopen its doors to new residents who have waited too long for a home, and who are in desperate need for the services STS provides.
We intend to influence Connecticut lawmakers to agree.
Advocates for Our Members
We provide education, news and resources to keep members informed on issues affecting I/DD individuals and their families.
We work in partnership with VOR, a national organization that advocates for high quality care and human rights for I/DD individuals.
We lobby CT lawmakers to support STS as a solution for next generations of I/DD individuals.
We organize social events, hosted at STS, such as holiday parties, celebrations and gifts, and summer concerts.
