Let us also not forget the people working behind the scenes in institutions, like Southbury Training School, caring for the mentally and physically handicapped. These caregivers work double and triple shifts making sure the residents’ needs are tended to. Among other things, these residents have needs related to eating, bathing, recreation and medical care. The caregivers sometimes have to put up with physical abuse, among other things. They are the unsung heroes, and they put their lives on the line every day! Three staff members who were unsung heroes recently died from COVID-19 complications. Let’s not forget the special care workers! They also come home after working 16-hour shifts just to sleep, and then do it all over again.
